I don’t know if it’s “non bloggery” of me to say this – but up until my college years, I did not have any appreciation for closet basics or staples… whatever you want to call them. I filled up my closet with the latest and greatest (or whatever my part-time job paycheck could afford) and was constantly having the feeling of nothing to wear. It wasn’t until my junior or senior year that I started to realize that a good pair of denim and plain t-shirts were the way to go. I don’t know if it was because anytime I had a little extra money to spend on clothes I just wanted something fun and new, or that I genuinely didn’t appreciate good clothes. Either way, it took me awhile to get it. But now I am a firm believer in spending money on items that will LAST.
DENIM
My first closet staple I think everyone needs is a quality pair of denim. The pair I am wearing in this post are from Free People – shop them here! Denim is my number one staple because you can wear it with ANYTHING. It’s so easy to dress down with vans or dress up with wedges!
Favorite places to buy denim are Nordstrom (Topshop or Free People) Old Navy, American Eagle and Hollister. All of those stores are certainly different than one another – but their denim is my favorite and has been for years!
TEE’S
Moving on to tops! Everyone needs a few throw and go tee’s, as I like to call them. A good tee that you know fits well, that you can throw and go and be ready for anything! I always stock up on basics at either Old Navy, Target or Loft. The “luxe” tee’s at Old Navy are my current favorite, and baby soft! I have a few neutral colors in both long and short sleeve.
SHOES
Shoes really depend on your style, and what you’re into! Some girls never wear heels, as some never wear flats. So closet basics will depend on who you are and your style, but I did want to share where I shoe shop! I love DSW and Target for shoes. I was going through my closet earlier while writing this post and realized that a ton of my favorite pairs are from either of those stores. DSW always has the latest trends, and a ton of sales going on! Target is always my go-to for sandals or any type of spring/summer shoe staple.
